The Children’s Office has gained certain experience on science communication and science events for children and teenagers in organising the Vienna Children’s University, which takes place yearly and involves several Viennese universities. With the increasing number and institutionalisation of „children’s universities“ – in the German-speaking countries, there are now more than 100 universities which offer similar activities – the need for an exchange of experiences and stronger networking between individual organisers has grown, especially across language boundaries.
After a positive evaluation of a Children’s Office project proposal by the European Commission, the Children’s Office has now been named coordinator within the framework of EUCU.NET (European Children’s Universities Network), in order to take stock of existing children’s university activities within Europe. Additionally, knowhow transfer will be stimulated through an interactive web portal and bilateral co-operations. Also, standards for organisation and implementation are going to be developed, as well as the basics for a sustainable impact analysis on the basis of accompanying studies.
EUCU.NET was financed within the framework of the 7th Framework Programme of the European Community for research, technological development and demonstration activities, Science in Society, and ran for two years.
